Lachenalia ensifolia is native to the Cape Provinces of South Africa.It consists of a single, purple fleshy bulb with fine white adventitious roots, and two spreading, broadly lanceolate leaves, 45-80×15-30mm, with distinctive grooves on the upper surface. The leaf is leathery and usually bright green.
The inflorescence, in the form of a corymb or cluster of flowers nestled between the leaves. Flowers are purple ,with a strong almond scent. Flowers are erect, tubular,with strongly reflexed tepals.
