Polytrichum commune is one of the tallest mosses and definitely has the tallest sporophytes. Haircap Moss provides erosion control solutions holding the soil tightly in place. Polytrichum commune are a deep green with dramatic changes in appearance based upon moisture content. Leaves will tightly curl around the stem when dry and within a minute will unfurl with misting. Sporophytic setae start as bright green and transition through yellow, orange and red shades. The sporophytes reach 4” in height and last on the plant colonies for months. New Polytrichum plants will establish themselves naturally amongst other mosses. It grows in both sun and shade locations.
